Reading

Reading Intent

At St Laurence Church of England Primary School, we believe that the ability to read well is fundamental to pupils’ development as independent learners, during their time at school and beyond. As a community of readers, we appreciate that reading is central to our ability to understand, interpret and communicate with each other and the world around us.

We also know that reading for pleasure, curiosity and interest can develop our children academically, socially and emotionally.

Success in reading has a direct effect on progress in all areas of the curriculum; therefore reading is given a high priority at St Laurence Church of England Primary School, enabling the children to become enthusiastic, independent and reflective readers across a wide range and types of literature. This supports our children to concentrate, persevere and build their self-confidence.

Reading For Pleasure

Each class takes part in a ten minute session of reading for pleasure every day. Children are encouraged to read a text of their choice and the adults in the room will read too!

Accelerated Reader

Children in Years 2-6 follow Accelerated Reader. Each child has a "Reading Range" of books to choose from. Once children have finished their book, they complete a short quiz on it to assess their understanding and determine if they can go on to choose a new book.
